Art teacher
Valerie J.

Valerie was born in St. Louis, Missouri and moved to Houston when she was 5. She loves the melting pot culture and variety of arts that Houston holds. Valerie has been immersed in the arts since childhood, drawing from a young age and getting involved in art competitions.

After a life-changing visit to see historic art and architecture in Europe, via her high school art club, she decided to pursue a career path in art. Valerie graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Houston in 2006, with a focus on Interior Design and Architecture. She began working with children through Child Advocates in 2007, and began teaching in 2020.

Valerie’s favorite medium is pencil, and her preferred genre is Still Life. She particularly loves to combine graphite pencil with colored pencil to portray her favorite subjects of flowers, people and animals. She also loves to create functional art through painting furniture and other housewares, transforming them into works of art with interesting line patterns and ink transfers.

Valerie’s hobbies include drawing, painting, spending time outdoors with her daughter and her pup, cooking with friends and family, reading, listening to music, camping and traveling.
