Art Teacher
Margaret S.

Margaret (Maggie) is a Houston-based artist who explores the history of mark-making and the narratives surrounding her through personal experience. She graduated from the University of North Texas in 2016 with a BFA in Watercolor and Painting/Drawing, where her work primarily focused on traditional mediums. She then went on to receive her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. During her time there, she expanded her practice beyond painting and drawing, venturing into abstraction. By incorporating fabrics and various types of paper, she is able to enhance her work with more mark-making, texture, and layers, creating materials that reflect how she perceives the world.

While in graduate school, Maggie collaborated with the museum's education department to develop curricula for students of all ages throughout the Philadelphia metroplex. This experience allowed her to discover a unique approach to teaching art history through hands-on activities, emphasizing the importance of understanding materials as an artist does. Her teaching style prioritizes individual expression, encouraging each student to explore their own vision rather than creating mere replicas.

When Maggie is not teaching, she spends her time with her dog Lexie while in her studio working on her collage landscapes, experimenting with materials to expand her creative palette. She is also an avid traveler, driven by a desire to experience the world through diverse cultures which is reflected in her art. Her most recent trip was an artist residency in Kaval, Greece, where she engaged with local people and learned about the landscape and history of Greek and Roman cultures.
