Our Musical Theatre Techniques class is a great choice for anyone who is new to musical theatre and would like the opportunity to experience what it’s all about! More broadly, this class is designed for students who love to sing, dance, and act.

The class, which is available for Students ages 7 to 11, and 12 to 15, meets for 60 minutes each week. The first half of each class focuses on strengthening all three disciplines: dancing, acting, and singing. For the remainder of the class, students learn a musical number from a Broadway show. We spend around 4-6 weeks on each song and then we rotate to a new song from a different show. This is a non-performance class and is meant to be used to gain and refine skills to eventually use in a performance setting.

Musical Theatre Techniques is offered for two different age groups/levels:

Musical Theatre 101 is designed for ages 7-11

Musical Theatre 201 is designed for ages 12-15

The main difference between the two age groups is the material we work on and the length of time spent on the material. To appeal to younger ages, Musical Theatre 101 includes more theater games and interactive activities. By comparison with Musical Theatre 201, the songs and choreography are easier to learn.

Musical Theatre 201 deals with more mature and more challenging material. Here we look into character study through voice and movement. The music and choreography are more complex than in 101, and we go into greater depths with these elements. Skills learned in 201 are more advanced. Most of the 201 have been in shows or participated in musical theatre in some form.

What does a Musical Theatre class cover?

The first half of each class focuses on strengthening singing, dancing, and acting fundamentals — vocal technique, basic choreography, scene work. The second half is applied: students learn a number from a Broadway show, spending 4–6 weeks per song before rotating to a new musical. This is a non- performance class designed to build skills students can later use in productions, auditions, or showcases.

What's the difference between 101 and 201?

Musical Theatre 101 (ages 7–11) is designed for younger students with more theater games, interactive activities, and easier songs and choreography. Musical Theatre 201 (ages 12–15) addresses more mature and challenging material, character study through voice and movement, and more complex music and choreography. Most 201 students have prior musical-theatre experience.

Should my child take Musical Theatre, Acting, or Voice Lessons?

If your child loves singing-dancing-acting as a combined experience, Musical Theatre is the home. For pure scene work and audition skills without the singing focus, Acting Classes are the right entry. For one- on-one voice training (with no group dancing or scene work), Voice Lessons. Many students do all three.
