Benefits of Learning the Drums
Why make the drums your (or your child’s) instrument of choice? There are lots of benefits that come with taking drum lessons, including the following:
Drumming helps to reduce stress and anxiety.
Drumming and playing other percussion instruments help students to improve their sense of rhythm and timing, which can improve their ability to play other instruments and master the fundamentals of music.
The drums are essential to a band’s success, and students who take drum lessons learn the importance of being team players and keeping the group together and on time.
Drumming (and playing other instruments) helps to improve blood flow and supports the immune system.
Drumming creates a sense of community and teaches students how to work together with other musicians.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How are CFMA's drum lessons structured?
Each lesson combines two halves: technical work on the pad or kit (sticking, rudiments, timing with a metronome) and applied work (grooves, fills, songs, charts). Beginners spend more time on the pad; intermediate students balance both; advanced students focus on styles, chart reading, and performance.
-
What's the equipment story at CFMA?
Drum students at CFMA learn on real, professionally maintained acoustic equipment in our drum studio — a full kit, marimba, or a selection of Latin percussion. Many competitors teach on smaller electronic setups; we believe the right gear in the room matters.
-
What age should a child start drum lessons?
Most drum students start between ages 7 and 9. Younger students (5–6) can start on a practice pad and hand drums. We'll evaluate readiness at the free trial.
-
Do we need a drum kit at home?
Not at first. Beginners need a practice pad, a metronome, and sticks (about $40 in gear). By month 3–6 most students benefit from access to a kit, either at home or by booking a CFMA practice room. Electronic kits are excellent for apartment-dwelling families.
-
Acoustic vs electronic kit — which is better?
Acoustic feels and sounds best. Electronic kits are quieter and smaller, great for home practice. The pedagogy is the same on either.
-
Can drum students perform in recitals?
Yes — drum students perform in our free semester recitals on our Recital Hall stage.
-
Can adults take drum lessons?
Yes — see Adult Music Lessons for evening and Saturday options.
