Emma W.

Emma W. is a pianist and cellist originally from northern Illinois. She holds a master’s degree in musicology from Rice University (2024) and a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Lee University (2022). She studied piano under the direction of Joong-Han Jung, Muen Wei, and Merle Langs, and cello with Theodore Kartal. Emma was principal cellist for the Lee University Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Strings, and a member of Rice University’s Campanile Orchestra. She has also played harpsichord and viol da gamba in Rice University’s Collegium Musicum. Emma has received awards in several piano competitions, which include soloist for the 2022 Lee University Concerto Competition, 1st place in the Senior Division of the Chandler Starr Miller Scholarship Competition (2014), and 2nd place Senior Division of the Chopin Competition in Milwaukee, WI (2017). At Rice, Emma conducted historical research on Irish music and mythology of the 1840s, and presented her work at the American Conference for Irish Studies in Limerick, Ireland in 2024. 

Emma began teaching piano lessons in 2017 and has been an instructor at Cy-Fair Music and Arts and Music Academy of Texas at Katy since 2022. She enjoys teaching students of all ages, levels, and musical tastes. She uses a flexible approach to musical instruction, tailoring lessons to fit students’ individual goals, musical tastes, and learning styles. She also strives to provide students with a well-rounded music education, attending to musical technique, theory, rhythm, and musical expression. Most importantly, Emma believes music lessons should be fun and challenging, and enjoys helping her students find joy in music.
